NAUTICAL ART

ART TRADITIONS SERIES

Drawing inspiration from the sea, its symbolism, majesty and mystery, nautical art is a traditional theme for artists that transcends time. Across cultures, the marine world has been an important subject for artists. While depictions of ships and watercraft have been common since the beginning of recorded time, it was in the Middle Ages that the theme became its own distinct genre.

Artists working in a Nautical theme spend their lives developing a relationship to honing the ability to capture the changing nature of the water. From temperamental tides lapping craggy mountainsides, to serene waters capturing the setting sun on the horizon, the water is a captivating inspiration for artists around the world.
